The Dreaded B-Word

Have you ever met a business owner that hasn’t experienced burnout? (Yes, THAT B-word).

Don’t worry, I’ll wait…

Unfortunately most businesses don’t start out with an endless amount cash, a full time staff, the perfect systems and processes that you’re born knowing how to use, and a psychic to foresee every obstacle plus the solution to avoid it. More often than not the face of the company is also the front office, back office, customer service, tech support, etc., etc…

Attempting to balance so many hats is exhausting! And while your business may not be at the point where you can take a week long dream vacation to the Maldives, here are some tips you can do to bring some balance to your busy schedule.

Establish Boundaries

As a reformed people pleaser this one was the hardest for me. Even before I started my business I wanted to help everyone, anytime, anywhere, no matter what I had going on. I finally realized that no matter how much I bent over backwards for some people it would never be enough! When I started my business I established boundaries and expectations in the beginning of the relationship and maintained them throughout. I found that most people respected my boundaries and those that didn’t weren’t a good fit for me to work with anyway.

Reduce Busy Work

From speaking with customers, to writing emails, to ordering new products, to website updates… there will always be something to do in your business. But have you ever worked an entire day but feel like you’ve barely done anything? While many of those things are important, you need to prioritize what tasks are going to truly help your business and which ones are just busy work. Busy work can be any little thing you’re doing to avoid a big thing you need to tackle. Procrastinating very rarely yields rewards, so stop avoiding it! The sooner you get started the closer you are to getting done!

Prioritize Self Care

There’s a lot of talk going on about mental health, mindfulness and self care. While some consider it a bunch of “whoo whoo” and slacker foolishness, I strongly disagree. Your brain is a powerful organ and you can will things into existence if you believe hard enough. If a woman believes she is pregnant she can actually cause her body to respond as if she is! Your mind is so powerful so it’s important to give it time to recharge and take care of your body. You can start slow by trying one of the 7 types of rest, like going for a walk, reading a book or having an hour with no screen time.

Learn to Delegate

If you’re juggling all the responsibilities at some point you’re going to drop the ball… or three lol! Face it, as great as you are at your business, there’s no way you can be great at everything. Determine what your talents are and as soon as you can hire some assistance. If it’s not in the budget to hire someone full time, take on part time staffer or contractor. You can hire some amazing contractors on Fiverr. The sooner you can lighten your load the sooner you can focus more of your energy on what you do best! What is Digital Marketing Anyway?

I’ve made a lot of content about marketing, advertising and digital marketing… but what exactly is Digital Marketing?

According to MailChimp‘s glossary: “Digital Marketing, also called online marketing, is the promotion of brands to connect with potential customers using the internet and other forms of digital communication. This includes not only email, social media, and web-based advertising, but also text and multimedia messages as a marketing channel.”

Some popular forms of digital marketing include:

  • Using a Website
  • Social Media Accounts
  • Social Media Advertising
  • Email Marketing
  • SEO (Search Engine Optimization)
  • SEM (Search Engine Marketing)
  • PPC (Pay Per Click)
  • Producing Content

Essentially anything you’re doing online to increase your visibility and potentially generate new clients counts as digital marketing. I’m willing to bet you’ve done at least two of the things listed above.

It’s not necessary for businesses to do every form of Digital Marketing I listed. In fact, it doesn’t matter how many types you decide to implement, if you don’t have a solid strategy you’re not going to get the results you’re looking for!

How are you showing up online?

I made a previous post about how you only get one chance at a first impression on social media (read it here). Well the same is true for your website. It takes users about 50 milliseconds (that’s 0.05 seconds) to decide if they want to stay on your website.

Also if a website is slow to load, not easy to use, or looks low quality, users are less likely to remain on your website, let alone purchase your products or services.

I can recall a few years ago when I was looking for a new nail salon. I chose the nail salon with the best website, it was easy to book an appointment and they had current pictures of their work on Instagram. The salon without those things might have done better work, but I’ll never know because I couldn’t figure out how to book an appointment!

There are several reasons according to Forbes why you should invest in a good website:

  • Makes You More Credible -having a website tells customers you’re a legitimate business and makes them feel more comfortable buying from you.
  • Establish Your Brand -why should choose you over your competition? On your website you can showcase accolades, awards, certifications and positive reviews from past customers.
  • Creates Organic Traffic -when someone is looking for the product or service you provide on a search engine your website will show up.
  • Digital Marketing -having a website is a type of digital marketing. Also, when using paid ads you need to send the consumers to a location to acquire your services and the easiest place is your website!
  • Updates and Announcements -if you change locations, decide to offer a new service or are putting on an event your website is the perfect place to inform current and future patrons of these updates.

Even if you can’t afford a top dollar website today, you should still definitely invest a website. There are so many sites like GoDaddy, SquareSpace and WordPress that are easy to use and don’t require any coding knowledge. Even Google My Business offers a basic website!

A good basic website should include:

  • Who you are
  • What you do
  • How to contact you
  • Be easy to read your content
  • Be easy to navigate

Don’t complicate things with fancy codes and additional links that you might not be able to maintain once the web developer completes the job. If it still sounds like too much to handle, don’t worry! Lights, Camera, ….Eh?!?

So you’re getting ready to shoot your first commercial! How exciting! Or maybe you’re not going as big. Maybe you’re getting ready to shoot a simple promotional video, go live or make a TikTok/ Reel…

Or maybe you’ve shied away from all of these because your camera shy or worried you won’t know what to say. Don’t fret! Here 3 R’s to help you get on camera ready!

First: Relax Yes, going on camera is not an easy task, especially if it’s not something you’re used to, but it’s not impossible! Take a few deep breaths & shake off the jitters. If it’s recorded and you mess up, that’s okay! Keep doing it over until you get it right. If it’s live and you stumble that’s okay too! You’re human and showing flaws makes you more relatable.

Second: Remember You might have a script to read for your video but the more natural you sound the better. If you don’t have a script jot down key points you want to make sure to mention in the video to keep you on track. Also if this video is about your business, a product you sell or a service you provide , it’s not foreign to you. Flex your knowledge a little and let your audience see your expertise!

Third: Release While we may strive for perfection it’s not always attainable. Get to a point where you’re comfortable with the video and put it out there. You can always go back an improve on what you did but don’t let the revisions keep you from sharing all together.

It’s difficult to manage what’s going one behind the scenes from in front of the camera. If you’re in need of a creative director or project management for your next shoot don’t hesitate to contact me!

I have over a decade of experience in media both in front and behind the camera. I will be happy to make your next commercial or video shoot a success! Schedule a consultation for a creative marketing strategy session today!
